My name is Jacqueline - I'm a socially moderate, religiously conservative, and politically liberal girl just loving life right now! I'm a 24 year old Master's of Media Studies student at the University of Texas, but an Oklahoma alumni and die-hard Sooner fan! I'm currently writing my thesis - in a nutshell my research is about girls' online lives, particularly informal learning environments. I'm also an English & Language Arts teacher for a local Home School Co-op. When I'm not researching for my thesis or writing lesson plans - I'm usually watching college football! Oh yea, and I'm training to run a half marathon with Teams in Training this winter, I'm pumped!

Nothing ever just falls into my lap!
Monday night I emailed my professor (History of Media and Social Change) some ideas and struggles I was having with the paper that is due Friday. He emailed me back with some helpful advice so Tuesday afternoon I stopped by his office just to say thanks and let him know I got the email. Well, we started talking and he started telling me how much he likes my ideas and he wants me to have the opportunity to expand upon them, just not for this assignment.
He was hesitant to tell me something, he said he was going to wait til after he read my paper, but after talking to me for a few minutes he asked me if I wanted to do an independent study with him and write a paper to submit to the Honors Undergraduate Research Journal in the spring. I told him I'm graduating in the fall and wouldn't be here in the spring but that I would sitll very much like the opportunity to do research with him. Then we talked about grad schools and basically he is going to guide me in writing a research paper that I can completely cater to submit to graduate school.
I'm suppose to narrow down my grad school selection this summer and look at specific requirements and then pick about five topics I'm interested in and then he'll help me choose one and I'll get to write a research paper with him. This excites me SO much! And seriously, stuff like this never happens to me, I always have to seek out opportunities, which I admit I don't always make the effort I should.
So I left his office very excited and not too disappointed about not being able to do THURJ. However, I checked my email that night and Dr. Keppel had called the honors college on my behalf and found out that even though I'm graduating I'll still be eligible to submit my work to the journal! Double goodness!
Ironically I'm procrastinating on the paper I should be writing for his class right now to blog about an opportunity that doesn't even go into effect until Aug. but I'm just so excited to get the chance to do research in something that interests me and that can help me get into grad school and maybe even get published - and my professor picked me! He liked my ideas, woohoo!
So back to my current paper: Cultural Assumptions, Hegemonic Control, and the Media as a Facilitator...suddenly this doesn't seem as exciting anymore.

Roller coaster favorite ride
I had an absolutely perfect weekend, however the rest of the week is gonna kick my butt.
First the weekend - my mom came up on Friday and she took Brandon and me and my sister and her boyfriend all out to Ted's, yum! We had a really long wait but it was for sure worth it. My mom goes to bed early and she stayed with my sister so I went to The Library with a few friends for a drink.
Saturday we (my mom, my sis and I) went to the Union for the luncheon and stuff, it was ok. Afterwards we went shopping at Harold's outlet, love that store! I got a really cute skirt and shirt and two really cute pairs of shoes. Afterwards we went to the Natural History museum and they had a cool bird exhibit. Then we introduced my mom to the goodness that is Pita Pit. At this point my sister had to leave so it was just my mom and me.
We went to the Art museum which was wonderful, I hadn't been to the new building yet...very cool indeed. It was a beautiful day outside so we decided to go to the duckpond and read...good idea in theory anyway. Turned out to be way too windy to read so we just talked and ended up at Gourmet Vue for reading. Afterwards we went to Victoria's for dinner. Everyone needs to go there and order the Black Pepper Linguine with spinach and crab in a lemon-garlic sauce. SO GOOD!
Came home and my mom was going to bed but we ended up staying up til bout 1 a.m. just talking, so nice. I love my mom! I got to take her to church with me on Sunday and she really liked it. Afterwards we went out with some friends for lunch and that was that.
A truly wonderful weekend!
This week however is probably going to kill me! Why did I decide to start my new job when I have so much school stuff to do this week, I'm not even going to have time to breathe. And get this...the lovely training manager thought it would be a good idea to schedule me, a night-owl college student for not one, but TWO 5 a.m. shifts this week...how the heck I'm going to pull that off I have no idea! I usually go to bed around 3 and now I'm suppose to be waking up at 4. And I have so much homework this week I couldn't go to bed early if I tried.
Oh Lord give me strength for this one, amen!

I live with three other girls in a four bedroom townhouse. This means that there are two bedrooms upstairs and a bathroom, and two bedrooms downstairs with a bathroom. I share the downstairs bathroom. I am rarely upstairs except on the rare occassion that I really have to pee and the downstairs bathroom is occupied. So I go upstairs maybe once a month. This is relevant to my observed phenomenon, I promise.
Now, I am one of those people who buys a different shampoo everytime I run out. And I buy the different shampoos based on different reasons. There are about four or five brands that I like and tend to cycle throughout the year. Again, this is relevant to my observation.
Well, in the beginning of the year I bought Brillant Brunette, seeing how I'm a brunette and all. Well, I was talking to my upstairs roommate, and it turns out she had recently bought it too. Okay, nothing too odd about that. We are both brunettes and the appeal of a new product made just for us was too great to resist, despite the expensive price.
Well, the next time I bought shampoo/conditioner I bought Dove. This is because it makes my hair extra soft, almost too soft, but I felt I needed it in the dry winter months. Well, I happen to be in the upstairs bathroom a few days after my purchase, and I discover that my roommate has also purchased Dove...kinda weird...just wait.
Well, a few months after this I run out of products again and this time I purchase that Garnier Fructis (sp?) stuff because I notice my hair has been really frizzy lately and I've heard this stuff helps de-frizzize my hair. I've never even used the stuff before. Well...as you have probably figured out by now, my roommate also purchased Garnier.
Seriously, we don't share a bathroom, or shower, or even go Walmartin' together, neither of us are aware of what the other is purchasing...it's weird.
Well, right before spring break I ran out of stuff again. This time I decided to buy Herbal Essence since I was going to be spending the entire week with six guys, sharing pillows, and close quarters and beds and tents, I figured I'd buy something that would make my hair smell especially nice (read: girly). Yes, my logic is weird, just go with it.
Well, yesterday I use the upstairs bathroom for the first time in weeks, and lo and behold, there is Herbal Essence in the shower.
How weird is this? Do advertising campaigns just affect us in the exact same way? Or do we have identical hair needs? There is no logical explanation for this - especially since we don't even share a bathroom, where maybe we would see each other's stuff and then be influenced to buy it. Or where we could try each other's stuff, like it and buy it. No...these purchases are completely independent of each other.
I don't even know what shampoo I'll buy next, but I bet it'll be the same as Katie's.

There's beauty in the breakdown
Let's see, it's only Tuesday?!?! How is that possible I have no idea. This week seems to be dragging on, is it too early to say that? I'm really ready for the semester to end, I'm not really enjoying any of my classes this semester. Stats is probably my favorite, yea never thought I would say that. And my History of Media and Social Change class is interesting, but we've been watching all these boring old clips that dull me to death.
One nice thing about Tuesdays though is Bible Study. I look forward to it all week, great fellowship and friends and it always puts me in a good mood, helps me get thru the rest of the week. Also, Tuesday means that tomorrow is the Wednesday meeting of the spring break group at the Library for happy hour - that is fun too!
It's been way too windy to play tennis, boo!
I had an interview at Panera Bread today, the cute guy said he'd call me back to set up a second interview with the hiring manager. *keep your fingers crossed* I just wish I had more availability. I'm in class til 4:20 every single day! At least when summer comes I can work whenever.
I've been reading "A Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius", and as depressing as it can be at times, it is equally as funny. I really like Dave Eggers writing style. I reccommend the book, if you can get through the first chapter, cuz that's the most depressing, thus far anyway.
Well, I need to go workout and do some homework...just thought I'd post a not so interesting update.
